Top Attractions in BelgradeSlavija SquareOne of the main traffic junctions and the city landmarks, Slavija Square, encompasses area between streets Kralja Milana, Beogradska, Mekenzijeva, Svetosavska and Bulevar Oslobodjenja, and Deligradska and Nemanjina streets. Up until the 1880s, citizens of Belgrade used to hunt wild ducks in this area. When the Scot, Francis Mackenzie, representative of foreign Bible society and a businessman bought a large space above the current square and divided it for sale, its formation started to develop. McKenzie soon built a house for himself on the site of the former "Slavija" cinema, which was in 1910 turned into the Socialist People's Hall, the meeting place of the labor movement. Other buildings at the corner of King Milan Street and the Square where famous restaurant "Three peasants" and "Rudničanin" were – have been demolished before the Second World War. The first hotel "Slavija" was built in the period from 1882 to 1888 and the name itself originated from the main architect and stayed until now; in 1962, the new hotel "Slavija" was built. At the center of the square there is a monument of Dimitrije Tucović, prominent leader of Serbian socialist movement, by whose name Square was also named during one period of time.
